How to get the best from your candle!

It's not the most exciting post, granted, but it's kind of essential viewing...

But first, thank you for buying one of my products, it honestly does mean a lot to me. Every time you buy from me, you encourage me to work harder and to believe in myself. Not only that, you are supporting my small business, which does not go unnoticed.

So back to the important stuff. I want you to get the BEST from your candle or lantern and so here are my tips & suggestions for doing so.

My candles are designed to be lit and burned. Nothing beats the flickering flame of candlelight to set the mood at any time or for any occasion.

Once removed from any packaging, all candles should be placed on a flat, level and heat resistant surface for the optimum burn and for safety reasons. Remember, you are buying what is classed as a ‘pillar’ candle (even although it’s not the traditional pillar shape), which is made using a typically harder wax and it's not in a container. So when the candle burns, there may well be drips of wax down the outside of your candle, but not always. However, wax drips only add to the character of a candle in my opinion :)

I would also suggest that you don’t leave it to burn all the way to the bottom; when there is approximately 1 cm of wax left at the base of the candle, please stop burning and say goodbye to this candle.

I tend to leave a curly wick (it’s prettier!) so please always trim the wick after purchase to approximately 1 cm before lighting. Leave at least 10 cm between burning candles and I suggest that you burn for no longer than 3-4 hours at a time. When you first light your candle, give it time, allowing a minimum of 1-2 hours to create a melt pool, therefore avoiding any future re-lighting issues or waste. Always keep the wick trimmed to approx. 1 cm by trimming the cotton wick with scissors or a wick trimmer and keep your candle wax free of any loose wick trimmings.

If you have a candle with decoration on it (e.g. the daisy candle or butterfly candle), please be aware that the appliques will also melt (they too, are made of wax). Personally, I prefer to leave them on and let them melt with the candle, but you can remove them if you wish, to minimise wax drips. It’s up to you! They can be removed easily. This is also something to bear in mind when you transport your candle home or when sending on to someone as a gift. Please package well and carry with care as the decorations are fragile.

All my candles are made with rapeseed oil wax, a natural vegetable wax which is renewable and sustainably (British) grown with no association of intensive farming or GMO (genetically modified organism) presence. Rapeseed wax is clean burning and will clean up easily with warm soapy water if you have any spillages. Remember too, that all my candles are unscented and there is nothing else added to the basic candle. Please note that the decorations are made using a different (more pliable) wax.

Before, after and during lighting time, avoid placing your candles where they will be directly exposed to sunlight or harsh indoor lighting, such as a spotlight. Candles may fade if they are left in bright light for an extended period of time and may also melt quicker. After extinguishing, allow the candle to cool completely before relighting or handling.

Lanterns

Lanterns are a little bit different because you are not burning them. However, to get the best from your lantern, there are still a few things to remember.

Don’t forget, as with most of my candles, each one is handmade and always unique; no design is ever the same.

As with the candles, they are fragile, so please take care of them when carrying home or packaging up to be sent off to someone as a gift. The lantern is made from wax, which is harder than rapeseed oil wax, but it can still be broken or cracked. The lantern will never melt when in use (if you follow the recommended instructions), but if dropped or bashed, or left for a long time in sunlight or direct heat, it can be damaged.

Similarly, any decoration which has been applied can be knocked off easily, so please take care when handling.

Please use the recommended size of tea light which is appropriate for your lantern (I always supply you with a tea light and further tea lights can be purchased from me). I recommend that you do not use a scented tea light as this can have an impact on the size of your flame.

Please make sure your tea light is placed in the centre of your lantern and on the base provided. Do not leave your tea light burning for more than 4 hours at any one time.

Finally, don’t forget the basics for all products. Always keep a burning candle/lantern out of the reach of children & pets and out of draughts. Do not move while lit. Never leave a burning candle unattended and never use a candle/lantern as a nightlight.

But most of all, please ENJOY your product :)
